Jean Dreze is a Belgian-born development economist known for his work in India on issues such as hunger, gender inequality, famine, child health and education. The 58-year-old scholar-activist, who has co-authored books with Nobel laureates, including Amartya Sen, is credited with having first conceptualised and authored the first draft of the MNREGA, an employment-generation programme in rural India launched by the previous UPA government.
