Nitish Kumar, Chief minister of Bihar and the national president of Janata Dal-United, had taken over the reins of his state when it was in the pits. But in the past 12 years, the 66-year-old leader has brought about a turnaround in the state with good governance and restoration of the rule of the law. He has changed his allies, from the BJP to the RJD, but his focus on development remains unchanged. His work to empower women in various ways, including 50 per cent reservation in panchayat polls, has enhanced his reputation.
