One of the greatest living historians of India, Irfan Habib has authored many acclaimed books on ancient and medieval India such as Agrarian System of Mughal India (1556-1707). The 86-year-old scholar, who was a professor of history at Aligarh Muslim University from 1969 to 1991, has had a strong stance against Hindu and Islamic fundamentalism. A Marxist historian, Habib has written books on the Vedas and the Vedic age and has been fiercely committed to secularism.
